WHAT IS LEGALISM?

WHAT IS LEGALISM?

By: Jack Guyler

Legalism is a strict adherence to the law to the point that the heart of the law is missed and that love for God is secondary.  Legalism is a focus more on the external – how things appear and how things are done, rather than the internal, or the motives for doing something.

Second, legalism is imposing your preferences, views or convictions upon someone else.  It could be almost anything from your view on wearing masks, homeschooling, political views, version of the bible that is used, type of dress or clothing, music preferences, etc.

Third, legalism is attempting to secure salvation by your works rather than allowing God to change your heart.  Thomas R Schreiner said, “Legalism exists when people attempt to secure righteousness in God’s sight by good works. Legalists believe that they can earn or merit God’s approval by performing the requirements of the law.”

Legalism is law over grace and outward appearance over the condition of your heart.
